Early this year there was some rumors, then announcement of Samsung’s first digital SLR camera. For time being Samsung announce two models GX-1L and GX-1S, they expect that they will be available in the shops around March. Samsung is not exactly a newcomer in dSLR class, it developed with his partner Pentax latest Pentax dSLR models. So new Samsung cameras looks like a Pentax, uses Pentax mount for lenses, shoots like a Pentax, it is actually Pentax just with Samsung logo on it.
In light and portable package Samsung camera offers CCD image sensor with 6.3Mpix, large and bright 2.5” diagonal display, high ISO sensitivity up to ISO 3200, bright viewfinder, 11 points auto-focus.
Samsung camera kit package brings us new Schneider Kreuznach D-Xenon lens using Pentax’s KAF bayonet mount. So you can use all Pentax dSLR lenses on new Samsung GX-1S. GX-1S doesn’t have rechargeable Li-ion battery, it uses cr3 or AA batteries, also it stores images on SD/MMC cards. Clearly this camera is meant for semi-professional/amateur use. Camera is designed to fill the gap in the entry-level dSLR , in which we have very strong competition in Canon 350d and Nikon D50.

Pentax camera will be available only in North American and Asian markets, and same camera will be available in Europe just under Samsung brand. Samusung announced in 2005 its plans to become world leader in digital camera production. Now its to eary to prognose success on the market for these cameras, but probably if the pricing is right, we will see many Samsung/Pentax cameras hanging from tourists necks.
