Fujifilm Finepix S5 PROFujifilm announces successor of it’s amateur / professional FinePix S3, and it is called FinePix S5 Pro, sale will start in early beginning of 2007. You probably can notice that Fujifilm skips S4 markings, in Japanese culture number 4 have bad connotation so eastern manufacturers usually just skips this number in their model markings ( Canon also, G3 was followed with G5, G6 and G7 ).
While developing this camera Fujifilm goal was to maximise image quality by constant research and improvements in sensor technology. Fujifilm FinePix S5 ProSix years ago Fujifilm presented, in that time revolutionary Super CCD image sensor. Today Fujifilm is presenting new Super CCD SR II image sensor. It’s unique design with 12 million pared photo-diodes, 6.17 million slight larger ‘S’ photo-diodes responsible for image information combined with 6.17 million smaller ‘R’ photo-diodes for bright area information. Using new Super CCD SR II sensor is allowing S5 Pro to reduce color noise, to increase dynamic range and enhance color and tonality quality. Also sensor is equipped with improved low-pass filter ensuring that moiré and noise are retain to minimum values. Fujifilm obviously is more interested in improving key features of digital photographs then just increasing sensors Mpix. In feature we will witness if that reasoning can be successful on the market that is always hungry for more Mpix, GHz, GB… Also new image sensor is not the only thing that Fuji prepared for its new camera, new Real Photo Processor Pro should ensure images in beautifully, matching human eye, vibrant colors. Real Photo Processor Pro implements two level noise reduction, permitting sensitivity up to ISO3200 resulting sharp, low-noise photos. Fujifilm responded to user demands and built in S5 Pro ability to at the same time record jpeg and RAW to memory card. This feature allows to distribute jpgs but still have RAW for post production.

Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro now is binging new professional magnesium alloy body with weatherproof seals and much better overall ergonomics. Body of new S5 is quite similar to Nikon D200.

New features comparing to S3

  • Real Photo Technology Pro, which combines the Super CCD SR Pro and the RP (Real Photo) Processor Pro, allows for greater dynamic range with smoother tonality from highlight to shadow
  • The improved Super CCD SR Pro features an optimised low-pass filter to reduce noise and minimise moire
  • The newly developed RP Processor Pro features two cycles of noise reduction which enables photographers to take images at even higher sensitivities (ISO 100 to ISO 3200) with visibly reduced noise
  • For even greater creative control over the FinePix S5 Pro’s dynamic range, photographers can now choose from up to six preset ranges between 100% and 400%
  • For improved reproduction of natural skin tones, three new variations of the original film simulation mode (F1) have been added (five modes in total)

Other camera features

  • Nikon F-mount compatibility for all functionality with all Nikkor AF-D/G and the latest AF-S optics
  • RAW+ jpeg dual-save mode
  • Mac and PC supported tethered shooting mode via USB 2.0 port and optional Hyper Utility software
  • Robust lightweight magnesium-alloy body with moisture- and dust-proof seals
  • Durable shutter unit stands up to approximately 100,000 cycles
  • Adoption of high-precision i-TTL flash control
  • 11-point AF sensor with faster auto-focusing than the FinePix S3 Pro
